What is Botox®
Very few of us could honestly say that we have not heard of Botox. The obvious reason for this is the incredible amount of press that Botox has received over the last few years but what exactly is it? Below we will try to explain in a simple and easy to comprehend fashion.
Botox is, essentially, is the Botulinum Toxin which has been treated in such a way that it can be used by humans. As a toxin untreated Botulinum is poisonous to humans, to such a degree that many would agree that it is one of the most dangerously poisonous substances known to man. To put it in a more technical way Botox® (a registered trade mark) is made from a neurotoxin known as botulinum toxin A. Most of us know of Botulism, a type of food poisoning which is caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The seven neurotoxins (a-G) produced by the bacterium halt the transmission of nerve messages causing paralysis and death.
Botox® is, when used correctly, is safe and has been FDA-approved since 1989. It is used widely in the treatment for such things as lazy eye(strabismus), cervical dystonia and blepharospasm to stop spasms and involuntary muscle contractions. Although Botox® is a very specific product the term is now used in a generic way to describe the use of Botox in the skin care treatment to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the face.
Although Botox Cosmetic is now approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for aesthetic use the FDA stated that only the lowest (effective) dose injection be used and then only once in every 3 months. Furthermore they stated that it should only be available on prescription. There are some dangers of adverse reactions when using Botox and it is advisable that pregnant and breast feeding women avoid using it. You should also avoid Botox if you are currently usings an antibiotic medicine.
Botox is used in a popular cosmetic procedure whereby the substance is injected into the facial skin and muscles in a controlled medical environment. Amazingly the paralyzing effects of Botox means that even the most severe glabellar lines ((frown lines) a furrow lines simple disappear. However the effects will wear off over time and the wrinkles, furrows and lines will return so it is, literally, a temporary solution to the problem.
For the last few years Botox has been one of the most popular anti-aging skin care treatments on the market. So many folk are having the treatment that social events are created where people have the procedure carried out in a more social setting. The FDA have become so worried about these "BOTOX® Parties" that they have issued warnings against them.
An extremely popular Botox alternative is the Dysport brand. However, when looking for alternative treatments some people look for something completely different because of the sad side effect of a face that can seriously lack expression after Botox. Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular alternative anti-aging, anti-wrinkle treatments available and chemical peels continue to remain extremely popular. Of the three treatments microdermabrasion is generally considered the most safe.
